Pachyderm WorldPosted by Jeremie (Brooklyn, New York, United States) on 5 September 2008 in Animal & Insect. Some 70 km out of Colombo, Sri Lanka, on the way to Kandy, lies an elephant paradise. Hiriwaduna Elephants Orphanage, near Pinnewala, was created to foster abandonned or orphaned elephants, in a country where the pachyderm population was decimated during decades of British presence. Hunting elephants was considered as a funny games for the settlers... Although very touristic, the orphanage gives an exceptional opportunity to mingle with those giants. An average of 60 elephants are fed at regular hours, brought to bath, and brought back for a nice nap... Pretty impressive to squat at the feet of the biggest mammal on earth! As I am moving in a new apartment this week end, I will have no access to Internet for few days and will therefore not be able to reply to your comments. However, photographs will still be posted everydays. I will try to catch up with you once I am back on the World Wide Web. See you soon!
