The Ochre Trail #4

Posted by Jeremie (Brooklyn, New York, United States) on 15 September 2009 in Architecture.

Another impressive spot on the Ochre Trail are the Mines of Bruoux, located near the small village of Gargas. Those mines of ochre started to be dug in the second half of the 19th century and were exploited until approximately the 1950s, reaching a total of 40 km of underground galleries, some of them up to 15 metres high... I was quite disappointed not being able to take picture inside the mines, due to security reasons, and was limited to the entrance, which already gives a good idea how does it look like... For the record, the yellow color is genuine and not much saturated !!
